Promotion of Collaboration with the Most Highly Regarded Education Institute to Foster Management Human Resources for the Service Industry Fostering Management Human Resources to Create Sophisticated Hospitality

On March 14, 2017, the Graduate School of Management at Kyoto University, an institute which the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has been supporting under the Industry-Academia Collaboration Project for Fostering Management Human Resources for the Service Industry, concluded a comprehensive collaboration agreement with the College of Business at Cornell University, the United States, the world’s best higher education institute in the fields of hotel management and applied economics.

1. Industry-Academia Collaboration Project for Fostering Management Human Resources for the Service Industry

As one of the efforts to revitalize the service industry and improve its productivity, METI provides support measures for efforts under university-service provider collaboration to develop expertise and practical education programs concerning management in the service industry (Industry-Academia Collaboration Project for Fostering Management Human Resources in the Service Industry). Under the FY2017 project, METI is supporting 18 universities across Japan. The selected universities are advancing the development of educational programs in a variety of fields in the service industry.

2. Efforts by the Graduate School of Management, Kyoto University

Through a project titled “Development of Educational Programs for Integrated Hospitality,” the Graduate School of Management, Kyoto University, supported in the FY2016 project, aims to improve productivity in cross-sectoral service areas. To achieve that aim, the graduate school is developing educational programs to foster management human resources capable of providing “sophisticated hospitality” (human resources with abilities unique to people in this IoT era), who have the ability (in terms of practice, understanding of theory, business management, and financial management) to take a comprehensive, bird’s-eye view over management.

The Graduate Schools of Management and Economics, Kyoto University, and the College of Business, Cornell University, the world’s best higher education institute in the fields of hotel management and applied economics, held discussions, and finally, on March 14, 2017, they concluded a comprehensive collaboration agreement. Under this agreement, both sides will advance efforts for inter-university exchanges of students and faculty and executive education programs. In the future, they will advance strategic collaboration with support from industry players, aiming to conduct related activities additionally applicable to programs for the development of managerial human resources for service industries overseas.

3. Future actions

Through this project, METI will support the development and operation of curricula for fostering management human resources in the service industry and will also advance activities that contribute to further improving the productivity of the industry from the viewpoint of service value creation including the utilization of IT.
