Results of the Regional Economic and Industrial Research (January–March 2017)

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has compiled the results of the regional economic and industrial research that the regional Bureaus of Economy, Trade and Industry conduct on a quarterly basis to identify regional economic trends, and METI hereby releases the results.

[Highlights of the results]
The assessment of the national economic situation remains the same as that in the previous quarter. It is “improving moderately.” Compared to the previous quarter, the assessment of regional economic conditions has been revised upward in the Hokkaido, Kanto, Tokai, and Hokuriku regions, and has remained the same in the Tohoku, Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa regions.

1. Regional Economic and Industrial Research

The regional Bureaus of Economy, Trade and Industry survey enterprises in their service areas using interviews and other survey techniques on a quarterly basis for the purpose of identifying economic trends in the areas, such as those related to business conditions, production, and investment in facilities, and collect and analyze the survey results.

2. General summary

The national economic situation is improving moderately (→)
Production shows an increase in the transportation equipment sector due to an increase in overseas demand and the effect of new-model cars, while the electronic parts and devices industry, mainly for in-car products and smartphones, shows steady performance. Private consumption shows movement in sales of luxury goods and clothing continues to be sluggish.

3. Regional summaries

[Hokkaido] Picking up (→)
Production shows signs of picking up due to an increase in the production of information devices, despite the effects of a decrease in food production due to the impact of damage caused by typhoons. Meanwhile, private consumption is picking up due to the steady performance in food and beverages. As for tourism, private consumption remains brisk, in response to the effect of the inauguration of the Shinkansen service.
[Tohoku] Picking up moderately although some businesses show weak performance (→)
Overall private consumption shows some pause, while a sign of picking up is seen in sales of new cars. Production shows signs of picking up due to steady performance in the electronic parts and devices industry for in-car products and smartphones and the transportation equipment industry for new-car production.
[Kanto] Improving moderately (↗)
Production shows signs of a moderate pick up due to briskness in transportation equipment and other industries. The employment situation is improving. As for private consumption, a sign of a moderate pick up is seen due to brisk sales of new cars and other factors.
[Tokai] Improving moderately (↗)
Production shows signs of increase in the transportation equipment industry and is moderately picking up in the electronic parts and devices industry. As for private consumption, a sign of picking up is seen due to the steady performance in convenience stores and drug stores, and the brisk sales of passenger cars.
[Hokuriku] Improving (↗)
Production is on an upward trend, mainly in the electronic parts and devices industry. The employment situation shows a steady improvement as promoting existing non-regular employees to regular employees is seen as securing human resources.
[Kinki] Improving moderately (→)
Production shows signs of picking up, as seen in the electronic parts and devices industry and the electrical machinery industry with performance remaining at a high level, along with an increase in the production machinery industry. As the employment situation improves, private consumption shows signs of moderate improvement.
[Chugoku] Picking up (→)
Production shows signs of picking up in the electronic parts and devices industry with steady performance in demand, and an increase in the general-purpose, production, and business-oriented machinery industry. Private consumption shows steady performance in sales in home appliances and passenger cars, showing a movement towards a moderate pick-up.
[Shikoku] Picking up moderately although some businesses show weak performance (→)
Production is almost flat, although briskness and sluggishness are varied among businesses due to the effects of overseas demand. Private consumption shows signs of picking up slightly, mainly in steadily performing foods and beverages, while clothing continues to be sluggish.
[Kyushu] Picking up (→)
Private consumption shows movement in sales of luxury goods because of an increase in overseas tourists to Japan during the lunar New Year and other factors. As for production, core automobile-related and semiconductor-related industries show an increase in production due to brisk overseas demand, are showing signs of picking-up.
[Okinawa] Continuing to improve (→)
ivate consumption remains steady. The movement of business investment is also picking up in enterprises.
