Agency for Natural Resources and Energy ANRE Confirms the Production of Natural Gas from Methane Hydrate under the Surface of the Seabed The second offshore methane hydrate production test launched

On May 4, 2017, the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy (ANRE) launched a gas production test to dissolve methane hydrate and extract natural gas in the offshore sea area along Atsumi Peninsula to Shima Peninsula (Daini Atsumi Knoll), and confirmed the production of natural gas in the area.

1. Background

Methane hydrate is a compound that consists of methane and water that are crystallized in a low-temperature, high-pressure state. A considerable amount of methane hydrate is estimated to be present in the sea areas surrounding Japan, which is expected to be a source of natural gas resources in the future.

2. Current state of the second test

Concerning the second offshore methane hydrate production test, since April 7, 2017, ANRE has been advancing preparatory work for the test in the offshore sea area along Atsumi Peninsula to Shima Peninsula using the Deep Sea Scientific Drilling Vessel Chikyu, and at around 10:00 a.m., on May 4, 2017, began production of natural gas in the area.

3. Future schedule

ANRE is scheduled to conduct continual gas production for approximately three to four weeks at one of the two wells for gas production where the second methane hydrate test is being undertaken and where different types of preventive measures against sand entry have been provided for. Following this, ANRE will also aim to produce gas for about one week at the other well for which another preventive measure is taken.
