On June 2 (Fri.), 2017, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) will hold an event titled “MAFF and METI Collaboration Symposium: Innovation Creation through Collaborative R&D for the Utilization of Living Resources, AI and IoT” at MAFF, Tokyo.

1. Outline

With the dramatic advent of technical development utilizing AI, IoT and other advanced technologies as well as that surrounding the development of new substances produced by genetic engineering, e.g., genome-editing technology, and the industrial utilization thereof, METI, MAFF and national R&D institutes supervised by each ministry have been collaboratively committed to a variety of research projects not beholden conventional frameworks, aiming to create innovation and enhance competitiveness in Japan.

At this symposium, Dr. Kazuo Kyuma, executive member, Council for Science, Technology and Innovation, Cabinet Office, will deliver a keynote speech concerning future Japanese society cultivated by the creation of a world-leading “super-smart society,” focusing on the theme of “Society 5.0.”

Moreover, the symposium will introduce three fields in which METI and MAFF have been collaboratively conducting R&D projects: [i] living resources, [ii] AI and IoT, and [iii] biology, and explain the latest state of related efforts and future directions of such R&D.
