1. Industry-Academia Collaboration Project for Fostering Managerial Human Resources for the Service Industry

As one of the efforts to revitalize the service industry and improve its productivity, METI provides support measures for efforts under university-service provider collaboration to develop expertise and practical education programs concerning management in the service industry (Industry-Academia Collaboration Project for Fostering Management Human Resources in the Service Industry).

Under the FY2017 project, METI is supporting 18 universities across Japan. The selected universities are advancing the development of educational programs in a variety of fields in the service industry.

2. Efforts by Nakamura Gakuen University

Since its adoption into the project in FY2015, Nakamura Gakuen University has been engaging in efforts for program development for fostering management human resources for the food service industry through the integration of nutritional sciences and distribution sciences. As one of the achievements of these efforts, the university inaugurated a new faculty “Department of Food Management” in April 2017.

Nakamura Gakuen University aims to foster human resources with not only quality language skills but also knowledge on overseas countries, and to this end, it has been advancing efforts for developing degree programs to foster human resources who will lead the next-generation food industry. In this process, the university, assisted by the support of METI, has been advancing coordination to establish a double degree exchange program with the University of Hawaii, an institute famous for its achievements in the development of a large number of human resources who engage in the food service management area. As a result of the effort, on May 27, 2017, Nakamura Gakuen University and the University of Hawaii will hold a signing ceremony for concluding an agreement on a double degree exchange program. This agreement will allow students of Nakamura Gakuen University to study in Kapi’olani Community College under the University of Hawaii, while keeping their enrollment in Nakamura Gakuen University, and also to acquire degrees in both universities if the credits that they have acquired in Nakamura Gakuen University are recognized in Kapi’olani Community College.

3. Future actions

Through this project, METI will continue to support efforts for the development of management human resources for the service industry, as seen in this support of the effort for developing educational curricula for fostering management human resources in the service industry.
