Japan has been encouraging Japanese companies to strategically utilize IT in their business. As part of this effort, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) have jointly been conducting the selection of outstanding companies for its efforts for IT utilization since FY2014. Under this program, METI and the TSE select and publicize such companies that are attractive to investors who prioritize improvement in corporate value from a mid- to long-term perspective, thereby aiming to encourage companies to engage in efforts for a competitive IT strategy.

METI and the TSE hereby announce that under the 2017 Competitive IT Strategy Company Stock Selection program, they have selected 31 companies. The program has been held three times.

In the 2017 program, METI and the TSE have established a new category called “Noteworthy IT Strategy Companies” for companies recognized as having potential to be equivalent to the selected companies or those engaging in noteworthy efforts. For this category, they selected and announced 21 companies.

1. Outline of the program

The program targets TSE-listed companies proactively engaging in efforts for IT utilization to improve management innovations, earnings and productivity in terms of improving mid- to long-term corporate value and fortifying competitiveness. METI and the TSE select such companies among all TSE-listed ones as Competitive IT Strategy Company Stocks by industry and introduce them to the public.

Rapid advances in IT are transforming industrial structures and business models at an unprecedented pace. For Japanese companies to succeed in international competition amid this environment, it is not enough to engage in defensive IT investment for the purpose of increasing the efficiency and convenience of internal operations, as has been the case until now; it is also vital for companies to take strategic and competitive IT investment that will contribute to improving mid- to long-term corporate value and fortifying competitiveness.

In particular, in the 2017 program, METI and the TSE focused on the assessment of companies based on the efforts for utilizing cutting-edge technologies, e.g., IoT, big data, AI and robots, which will contribute to the realization of the fourth industrial revolution, so as to create new business models and corporate value.

To assess companies’ current efforts for IT utilization, METI conducted a survey titled “2017 Survey of Competitive IT Strategies,” targeting all TSE-listed companies. In screening candidate companies, METI assigned scores to the responses concerning the following five areas and financial situation, and finally selected 31 companies screened by the final examination of the examination committee.

  1. Utilization of IT to increase corporate value in terms of management policies and plans
  2. Strategic utilization of IT to increase corporate value
  3. Systems and personnel for promoting the Competitive IT Strategy
  4. Fundamental initiatives supporting the Competitive IT Strategy
  5. Initiatives focused on evaluating and improving IT investment to increase corporate value

Selection criteria

  1. Score of the questionnaire responses and ROE should be above a specified level.
