Announcement of Selected Companies in the Competitive IT Strategy SME Selection 100 Program

In FY 2014, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) newly began the Competitive IT Strategy SME Selection 100 program, which focuses on SMEs’ utilization of IT in competitive fields. For its third selection at this time, METI hereby announces that it has selected 40 SMEs recognized for their proactive efforts for the effective utilization of IT and for their achievements of positive outcomes. FY2017 is the last year of the program, coming to 100 companies selected in total.

1. Outline of the program

With the recent sophistication of IT, companies’ utilization of such technologies is expected to play a key role for them in advancing their management innovations. In this trend, Japanese companies have been required to dramatically change their approaches to utilizing IT. Specifically, when Japanese companies invest in the IT field, they focus on taking “defensive” measures, primarily for the improvement of internal efficiency in tasks and cost cutting. On the contrary, overseas companies proactively conduct so-called “proactive investments in IT,” through their IT utilization for enhancing the development of new products and services or for changing business models, thereby aiming to create new value and fortify their competitiveness through this value creation. Against this backdrop, Japanese companies will also need to advance efforts for “proactive investments and utilization of IT.”

In FY 2014, METI began the Competitive IT Strategy SME Selection 100 program, aiming to select outstanding SMEs that have been proactively making efforts for the effective utilization of IT in competitive fields and achieving positive outcomes.

On May 31, 2017, for its third selection, METI selected 40 SMEs in the program and honored them.
