New Establishment and Revision of the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) (June 2017)

The Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) are a collection of national standards stipulating the criteria for products, including types/scales, quality/performance, and safety. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has been newly establishing and revising such standards in response to societal changes. METI has also been introducing the new establishment and revision of such standards once a month.

1. Outline of the new establishment and revision of standards

In June 2017, METI newly established six standards and revised twelve standards (see Appendix 1).

2. Outline of the JIS

Stipulated under the Industrial Standardization Act, the JIS are a collection of national standards certified by the government of Japan, aiming at the improvement of products in terms of quality, performance and safety, as well as the increase and enhancement of production efficiency and other areas.
The JIS stipulate a variety of product criteria, including types/scales, quality/performance, safety, testing methods for assessing these criteria, and other standard criteria that products should meet. These standards are utilized to ensure product reliability for manufacturers, users and consumers.

METI establishes or revises new standards for the JIS in response to technological advancements, safety requirements and other societal changes as necessary.

METI conducts such establishment and revision through the examination of proposals by the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee (JISC). METI hereby announces the results of the new establishment and revisions of the JIS in June 2017.
