Collection of Case Examples Concerning Smart Communities Compiled Efforts for optimizing energy utilization to be advanced

Aiming to popularize the Smart Community project, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) organized case examples of leading initiatives under the project and compiled summaries of the selected initiatives into a Collection of Case Examples Concerning Smart Communities.

1. Outline of the project

The Smart Community project aims to achieve a new type of societal system for communities with a predetermined population with the participation of a variety of consumers. In this system, consumers in these communities are able to utilize decentralized-type energy, e.g., renewable energy and cogeneration systems, and also access energy management systems that take advantage of advanced technologies, e.g., IoT and storage-battery control. In this framework, the project strives to contribute to comprehensively managing regional energy demand, optimizing energy utilization and also providing lifestyle support services (e.g., monitoring senior citizens) to such communities.

2. Outline of the collection

METI has been advancing a variety of demonstration programs and other efforts for the Smart Community project. As a result of these efforts, METI has discovered some challenges in establishing smart communities. One of the challenges METI has discovered is that the project has a large number of components with complicated relationships, causing difficulty for project participants in fully understanding the projects and designing appropriate project plans. To overcome this challenge, METI decided to organize the case examples of leading initiatives under the project as a reference for future establishment of smart communities and to compile summaries of the selected initiatives into a collection, targeting businesses and entities involved in the project.

METI hopes that this collection will help businesses develop approaches to establishing smart communities.
