The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry(METI) has been conducting initiatives to broadly introduce the efforts of leading enterprises that connect the promotion programs of diversity management to their business achievements and to expand the base on which enterprises promote such management. As part of the initiatives, METI has been recognizing outstanding enterprises in such management under the METI Minister Award program of the New Diversity Management Selection 100. On July 14(Fri.), 2017, METI will start a call for applicants for the FY2017 New Diversity Management Selection 100, which will be held for the sixth time since its inauguration.

In addition, METI will launch a new program this fiscal year titled “Diversity Management Selection 100 Prime,” aiming to recognize enterprises that have been engaging in diversity management “Diversity 2.0” in upgrading such efforts to those continuing to create corporate value in a longer period close to the mid- to long-term. METI will also start a call for applications for this new program on July 14(Fri.), 2017.

1. Outline of the program

To strengthen Japanese enterprises’ competitiveness while facing economic globalization and an aging society with fewer children, it is necessary to promote as an effective strategy for diversity management that provides diverse human resources, including women, foreign nationals, the senior, and challenged people, with opportunities to exercise their potential to the maximum extent possible and to take part in the value creation process.

METI inaugurated the New Diversity Management Selection 100 in FY2012, aiming to expand the base on which enterprises will promote diversity management, and has recognized 205 enterprises so far. In FY2016, METI also started holding a series of seminars across Japan to explain the best practices of recognized enterprises engaging in diversity management for the purpose of further raising public awareness of this program.
