New Establishment and Revision of the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) (July 2017) Establishment and revision of the JIS including pictograms

The Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) are a collection of national standards stipulating the criteria for products, including types/scales, quality/performance, and safety. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has been newly establishing and revising such standards in response to societal changes. METI has also been introducing the new establishment and revision of such standards once a month.

1. Outline of the new establishment and revision of standards

In July 2017, METI newly established two standards and revised seven standards (see Appendix 1). In particular, METI believes the revision of the standards for Public information symbols (Pictograms) are especially important, and therefore hereby announces the revision below.

Revision of the standards for pictograms:
Public information symbols (Pictograms) are guide signs to visually convey a variety of information without verbal communication. In light of the forthcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, Japan recognizes the importance of making pictograms more concise for overseas tourists as well as Japanese nationals. To this end, regarding the JIS Z8210 (Public information symbols), Japan revised seven pictograms and established 15 new pictograms and a help mark, from the viewpoint of making these pictograms consistent with those under the ISO. This effort is expected to achieve an environment in which people are able to more smoothly travel in Japan (see Appendix 2).

2. Outline of the JIS

Stipulated under the Industrial Standardization Act, the JIS are a collection of national standards certified by the government of Japan, aiming at the improvement of mineral or industrial products in terms of quality, performance and safety, as well as increase and enhancement of production efficiency and other areas.

The JIS stipulate a variety of product criteria, including types/scales, quality/performance, safety, testing methods for assessing these criteria, and other standard criteria that products should meet. These standards are utilized to ensure product reliability in quality for manufacturers, users and consumers.

METI has been establishing new standards or revising the existing ones for the JIS in response to technological advancements, safety requirements, and other societal changes as necessary.

METI has been conducting such establishment and revision through the examination of proposals by the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee (JISC). METI hereby announces the results of the new establishments and revisions of the JIS in July 2017.
