METI Minister Seko Visits the Republic of Kazakhstan

From July 21 (Fri.) to 23 (Sun.), 2017, Mr. Hiroshige Seko, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, visited Astana, the Republic of Kazakhstan. He attended an official event celebrating Japan Day as part of the Astana Expo 2017, and promoted Japan’s bid to host the World Expo 2025 in Osaka. In addition, he also held a bilateral meeting with H.E. Mr. Bakytzhan Sagintaev, Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, and both sides agreed on further enhancement of the Japan-Kazakhstan cooperative relationship.

1. Attending Japan Day events of the Astana Expo 2017

Minister Seko attended an official ceremony celebrating Japan Day as part of the Astana Expo 2017 held in Kazakhstan. At the event, he promoted Japan’s bid to host the World Expo 2025 in Osaka.

Minister Seko attended Astana Expo 2017 events, including the official ceremony, the parade for introducing traditions and cultures in Osaka, and the reception party organized by the Japan Pavilion. He explained Japan’s efforts for addressing energy issues, and conveyed Japan’s passion for hosting the 2025 World Exposition in Osaka to visitors.
Note: The theme of Astana Expo 2017 is “Future Energy.”

(2)Attracting public attention to Japan’s bid to host the World Expo 2025 in Osaka

Together with Mr. Ichiro Matsui, Governor of Osaka Prefecture, and Mr. Masayoshi Matsumoto, Chairman, Kansai Economic Federation (Kankeiren), Minister Seko expressed Japan’s vision for the World Expo 2025 in Osaka to governmental representatives worldwide and encouraged them to support Japan.

2. Holding a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Sagintaev

At a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Sagintaev, Minister Seko offered Japan’s congratulations to the country for the successful implementation of the Astana Expo 2017, and both sides confirmed the expansion of Japan-Kazakhstan cooperation not only in the field of resources and energy but also in non-resource related fields, triggered by the visit of Prime Minister Abe to Kazakhstan in 2015 and the visit of H.E. Mr. Nursultan Abishevich Nazarbayev, President of Kazakhstan, to Japan in 2016. Prime Minister Sagintaev expressed his expectations for further business development of Japanese companies in Kazakhstan, and both sides agreed on further enhancement of the Japan-Kazakhstan cooperative relationship.
