Results of the Regional Economic and Industrial Research (April-June 2017)

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has compiled the results of the regional economic and industrial research that the regional Bureaus of Economy, Trade and Industry conduct on a quarterly basis to identify regional economic trends, and METI hereby releases the results.

[Highlights of the results]
The assessment of the national economic situation remains the same as that in the previous quarter. It is “improving moderately.” Compared to the previous quarter, the assessment of regional economic conditions has been revised upward in the Tokai and Kyushu regions, remained the same in the Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Hokuriku, Kinki, Shikoku and Okinawa regions, and revised downward in the Chugoku region.

1. Regional Economic and Industrial Research

The regional Bureaus of Economy, Trade and Industry survey enterprises in their service areas using interviews and other survey techniques on a quarterly basis for the purpose of identifying economic trends in the regions, such as those related to business conditions, production, and investment in facilities, and they collect and analyze the survey results.

2. General summary

The national economic situation is improving moderately (→).

Production shows steady performance as seen in the brisk performance of semiconductor manufacturing devices and liquid crystal manufacturing devices in the general-purpose, production, and business-oriented machinery sector. Business investment shows proactive movement in the investment for enhancing productivity and laborsaving equipment. Private consumption is brisk in highly-functional products, despite the continued presence of budget-conscious attitudes.
 

3. Regional summaries

[Hokkaido] Picking up (→)

Production shows signs of picking up due to a production increase in construction materials, while agricultural machinery shows a decrease in production. Private consumption is picking up due to steady performance in food and beverages. As for tourism, private consumption remains brisk due to an increase in the number of overseas tourists and other factors.

[Tohoku] Picking up moderately although some businesses show weak performance (→)

Overall private consumption shows some pauses, despite signs of picking up in sales of new cars. Production is picking up due to the steady performance in the automobile-related and semiconductor-related sectors. The employment situation shows a more serious labor shortage.

[Kanto] Improving moderately (→)

Production shows signs of moderately picking up because of briskness in transportation equipment and other industries. The employment situation is improving. As for private consumption, signs of moderate increase are seen due to the brisk sales of new cars.

[Tokai] Improving (↗)

Production shows steady performance in the transportation equipment industry and signs of increase are seen in the electronic parts and devices industry. Private consumption is moderately picking up due to steady performance in convenience stores, drug stores, and passenger car sales.

[Hokuriku] Improving (→)

Production remains at a high level mainly in the chemicals and electronic parts and devices industries. As for private consumption, convenience stores and automobile sales show steady performance. As for the employment situation, the jobs-to-applicants ratio is further improved.

[Kinki] Improving moderately (→)

Production shows signs of picking up, as seen in the briskness in the production machinery and electric machinery industries and in the performance remaining at a high level in the electronic parts and devices industry. As the employment situation improves, private consumption shows signs of moderate improvement.

[Chugoku] Picking up moderately (↘)

Production remains flat due to the production decrease in the chemicals and automobile industries. Private consumption shows steady performance in sales in home appliances and passenger cars, showing a moderate acceleration trend.

[Shikoku] Picking up moderately although some businesses show weak performance (→)

Production is almost flat, while showing weak performance in some sectors due to the effect of sluggishness in overseas demand. As for private consumption, signs of moderate acceleration are seen due to the movement in sales of passenger cars, home appliances and others.

[Kyushu] Improving moderately (↗)

Production is on a moderate rise due to the production increases for the automobile-related and semiconductor-related industries. Private consumption is moderately picking up due to the brisk performance in luxury goods and other items against the backdrop of high stock prices and the demand of overseas visitors to Japan.

[Okinawa] Continuing to improve (→)

Against the backdrop of the increase in the number of tourists and the improvement of employment environments, private consumption shows steady performance. The movement of business investment remains steady in enterprises.
