METI State Minister Nishime Visits China

From August 31 (Thur.) to September 2 (Sat.), 2017, Mr. Kosaburo Nishime, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, visited Changchun, the People’s Republic of China, to attend the 11th China-Northeast Asia Expo.

1. Delivering speech at the Expo

(1)On September 1 (Fri.), the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China (MOFCOM), the National Department and Reform Commissions, and the People’s Government of Jilin Province jointly held the 11th China-Northeast Asia Expo in Changchun. State Minister Nishime attended the Expo as a representative of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). H.E. Mr. Wang Yang, Vice-premier of State Council, H.E. Mr. Qian Keming, Vice Minister of Commerce, H.E. Mr. Bayanqolu, Provincial Party Secretary of Jilin Province, and H.E. Mr. Liu Guozhong, Governor of the People’s Government of Jilin Province, and other senior officials from the central and regional governments of China attended the Expo as representatives of China. Moreover, overseas dignitaries attended the Expo, including senior government officials from the Republic of Korea, Russia, Mongolia and other countries in the Northeast Asia region as well as those from African and other countries. The Expo hosted approximately 2,800 booths by companies and associations from 35 countries, including six from the Northeast Asia region, as well as those by private companies and other entities in China.

(2)As a side event to the Expo, a High-level Forum for Northeast Asia Cooperation was held for approximately 1,200 participants. At the forum, dignitaries from a variety of countries delivered speeches concerning economic and trade cooperation in the Northeast Asian region, and State Minister Nishime delivered a speech explaining the recent Japan-China cooperation, further enhancement of future-oriented close economic cooperation, and the current relationship between the Japanese economies and Northeast China and future enhanced cooperation. Following this, he encouraged participants to further support Japan’s bid to host the 2025 World Exposition in Osaka.

2. Meetings with national leaders, senior Chinese government officials and others

Taking the opportunity of visiting Changchun, State Minister Nishime held meetings with Chinese dignitaries as follows.

(1)On September 1 (Fri.), State Minister Nishime held a meeting with Vice-premier Wang. He stressed the need for convening the Japan-China High-Level Economic Dialogue at the earliest opportunity and confirmed that Japan and China will fortify joint initiatives and further expand these trends, taking the great opportunity of the celebration for the 45th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and China and the 40th anniversary of the conclusion of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Japan and China to deepen exchange activities between people in Japan and China.

(2)On August 31 (Thur.), State Minister Nishime held a meeting with Vice Minister Qian. Both sides exchanged views concerning METI-MOFCOM joint initiatives, including the convening of the Japan-China Energy Conservation and Environment Forum and other Japan-China economic cooperation efforts. Following this, Japan requested that China convene the Japan-China High-Level Economic Dialogue at an early date and support Japan in its bid to host the 2025 World Exposition in Osaka.

(3)On September 1 (Fri.), State Minister Nishime held a meeting with Governor Liu. Both sides shared the recognition of the importance of economic exchange between Northeast China and Japan and agreed that SME business exchanges between Japan and China will embrace great potential as the economic structure changes in China.

(4)Moreover, State Minister Nishime frankly exchanged views with representatives of the ROK and Mongolia and requested that they support Japan’s bid to host the 2025 World Exposition in Osaka as.

3. Visiting a Japanese-affiliated company in China and exchanging views with staff

On September 1 (Fri.), State Minister Nishime visited FAW Toyota (Changchun) Engine Co., Ltd. in Changchun and exchanged views with the staff concerning the company’s current production and sales situations, challenges that Japanese companies are facing in China, and other issues. On the same date, he held a social gathering with people from Japanese-affiliated companies in China and exchanged views concerning the current situation and future perspectives in Northeast China.
