Advanced Small Radar Satellite Called “ASNARO-2” to be Launched by the Third Epsilon Launch Vehicle

ASNARO-2, an acronym of the “Advanced Satellite with New System Architecture for Observation,” is an advanced small radar satellite, the development of which the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has supported. METI hereby announces that Japan decided to launch the satellite by the Third Epsilon Launch Vehicle from a JAXA Uchinoura Space Center launch site on November 12 (Sun.), 2017.

1. Purpose

METI has been promoting the ASNARO project, an effort for developing earth observation satellites which excel in fast delivery, high performance, compact and low price, and aims to fortify the competitiveness of Japan’s space industry and expand its industries in which related technologies are utilized.

As part of this project, NEC Corporation has succeeded in developing a radar satellite for earth observation, i.e., ASNARO-2. In response, on November 12 (Sun), 2017, Japan will launch the satellite by the Third Epsilon Launch Vehicle from a JAXA Uchinoura Space Center launch site.

As a related initiative, an advanced small optical satellite called “ASNARO-1” was launched in 2014 and is undergoing demonstration operations.
