Winners of the 11th Kids Design Awards

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) hereby announces that the winners of the 11th Kids Design Awards have been selected. From among 462 applicants, Kids Design Association, an organizer of the award, selected one winner for the Grand Award (Prime Minister’s Award), titled “New Commuting Vehicle Series 40000: Seibu Railway Co., Ltd.,” developed by Seibu Railway Co., Ltd. and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. On Monday, September 25, 2017, Kids Design Association held a commendation ceremony at Roppongi Hills and received a message from Prime Minister Abe. As a representative of METI, Mr. Masaki Ogushi, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, attended the ceremony and delivered his expectation regarding the further development of kids design.

1. Outline

The term “Kids Design” herein refers to a group of ideas and initiatives for utilizing the power of design to create a social environment that will contribute to the sound growth and development of children who may play a role in the next generation.

The Kids Design Awards is a program which recognizes outstanding products, space and services that realize and disseminate the philosophies of designs for kids, namely, designs that contribute to the safety and security of children, designs that cultivate children’s creativity and sensibility, and designs for comfortably raising children. Winners will be allowed to use a Kids Design mark labeled on their recognized works.

The program has been organized by the Kids Design Association (main office: Minato Ward, Tokyo; Chaired by Mr. Masami Yamamoto, chairman of Fujitsu Limited), a non-profit organization (NPO) approved by the Cabinet Office. The organization was established in May 2006, and currently consists of 106 enterprises and associations from a variety of sectors, including 67 enterprises, 23 municipalities, and other advisory entities.

2. Outline of the 11th Kids Design Awards

Under the 11th Kids Design Awards, Kids Design Association received 462 applicants for the program and selected 298 winners for their works. Among the winners, one winner was selected for the Prime Minister’s Award as the Grand Award, four winners were selected for the METI Minister’s Awards, in addition to two for the Minister of State for Measures for Declining Birthrate Awards, one for the Minister of State for Consumer Affairs and Food Safety Award, one for the Minister of State for Gender Equality Award, and one for the Tokyo Metropolitan Governor’s Award.

The Kids Design Association held a commendation ceremony and received a message from Prime Minister Abe. As a representative of METI, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Ogushi attended the ceremony, delivered opening remarks and read the message on behalf of the prime minister.

METI will continue to support the program to disseminate and promote kids designs, aiming to cultivate children’s creativity and sensibility and assist parents with developing a society in which they have peace of mind in bearing and raising.
