The Small and Medium Enterprise Agency Fifth Japan-Russia Meeting Concerning SME Cooperation Held 50 SMEs and other entities attended from Japan and Russia

On Tuesday, October 3, 2017, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation held the Fifth Japan-Russia Meeting Concerning Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Cooperation in Tokyo. At the meeting, in addition to a Japan-Russia inter-governmental dialogue, a networking event was held among SMEs and other entities from both countries. Japan expects that SMEs and other entities from both countries will advance business development through these networking events.

1. Government session

At the dialogue, under the co-chairmanship of Mr. Kyoji Yoshino, Deputy Commissioner, Small and Medium Enterprise Agency (SMEA), and Mr. Maxim Parshin, Director, Department for the Development of Small and Medium-Sized Businesses and Competition, Ministry of Economic Development, Russia, participants explained measures for supporting SMEs undertaken by both governments respectively (e.g., those in the field of IT) and exchanged views.

In addition, representatives from the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), the Organization for Small & Medium Enterprises and Regional Innovation, JAPAN, and the Japan Finance Corporation (JFC) on the Japanese side; and the Russian Small and Medium Business Corporation, the Russian Non-Governmental Organisation for Small and Medium Business (OPORA Russia) and other entities on the Russian side; explained respective efforts for supporting SMEs and exchanged views.

2. Private session

Organized by JETRO, a networking event was held, bringing together SMEs and other entities from Japan and Russia (40 from Japan and 10 from Russia). At the event, participating SMEs and other entities in Japan and Russia explained their own efforts and exchanged views. Following this, a business matching event was held for participating companies.

Under the Memorandum of Cooperation on Small and Medium Enterprises concluded by METI and the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia in December 2013, four “Japan-Russia Meetings Concerning SME Cooperation” were held to facilitate cooperation in sharing SME support measures and vitalizing SMEs. The first meeting was held in Tokyo in March 2014, the second one in Ulyanovsk, Russia, in December 2014, the third one in Tokyo in June 2015, and the forth one in Khabarovsk, Russia, in August 2016.
