Results of the Regional Economic and Industrial Research (July-September 2017)

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has compiled the results of the regional economic and industrial research that the regional Bureaus of Economy, Trade and Industry conduct on a quarterly basis to identify regional economic trends, and METI hereby releases the results.

[Highlights of the results]
The assessment of the national economic situation remains the same as that in the previous quarter. It is “improving moderately.” Compared to the previous quarter, the assessment of the regional economic situation remains the same across Japan.

1. Regional Economic and Industrial Research

The regional Bureaus of Economy, Trade and Industry survey enterprises in their service areas using interviews and other survey techniques on a quarterly basis for the purpose of identifying economic trends in the areas, such as those related to business conditions, production, and investment in facilities, and they collect and analyze the survey results.

2. General summary

The national economic situation is improving moderately (→).

Production shows steady performance as seen in the brisk performance of automobile parts in the transportation equipment industry as well as semiconductor integrated circuits in the electronic parts and devices industry. Business investment shows proactive movement in investment for enhancing productivity and laborsaving equipment. The employment situation remains at a high level in the jobs-to-applicants ratio. As for private consumption, sales of luxury goods remain brisk and consumption by overseas tourists to Japan also continues to be brisk.

3. Regional summaries

[Hokkaido] Picking up(→)

Production shows signs of picking up due to a brisk production in information devices, while the production of construction materials decreases. Private consumption is picking up due to the steady performance in food and beverages. As for tourism, private consumption remains brisk due to an increase in the number of overseas tourists and other factors.

[Tohoku] Picking up moderately although some businesses show weak performance(→)

Production shows signs of picking up due to the brisk performance in the semiconductor-related sectors. Private consumption shows some pause as a whole partially due to the impact of continuous rain, while sales of new cars is picking up. The employment situation shows more serious labor shortages.

[Kanto] Improving moderately(→)

Production shows signs of moderate picking up because of briskness in transportation equipment and other industries. The employment situation is improving. Private consumption is moderately picking up due to the brisk sales of passenger cars, luxury goods at department stores, and other factors.

[Tokai] Improving(→)

Production shows an increase in the transportation equipment industry and a moderate increase is seen in the electronic parts and devices industry. Private consumption is moderately picking up due to the steady performance in convenience stores, drug stores, and passenger car sales.

[Hokuriku] Improving(→)

Production remains at a high level mainly in the electronic parts and devices, and chemicals industries. Private consumption shows signs of a moderate pick up mainly in supermarket and car sales.

[Kinki] Improving moderately(→)

Production remains flat but at a high level mainly in general-purpose, production, and business-oriented machinery, and electrical machinery industries. Private consumption is moderately improving due to the briskness in the sales of department stores, convenience stores, passenger cars and other factors.

[Chugoku] Picking up moderately(→)

Production shows signs of a moderate pick up due to the production increase in the chemicals and automobile industries. Private consumption is moderately picking up due to the brisk sales of luxury goods and high-value-added products, while sluggishness is seen in sales of clothing.

[Shikoku] Picking up moderately although some businesses show weak performance(→)

Production continues to fluctuate, while still showing weak performance in the construction machinery and transportation equipment (shipbuilding) industries. Private consumption holds firm in food and beverages, while showing steady performance in the sales of home appliances and passenger cars.

[Kyushu] Improving moderately(→).

Production appears to be in a pause while remaining at a high level. Business investment shows an increase for production and labor shortages. Private consumption is moderately picking up due to the sales of luxury goods, cosmetics with other goods holding firm.

[Okinawa] Continuing to improve(→)

Against the backdrop of the increase in the number of tourists and the improvement of employment environments, private consumption remains steady. The movement of business investment also continues to hold firm.
