Trade Remedy Seminar to be Held Toward Effective Use of Trade Remedy Measures including Anti-Dumping

On November 8 (Wed.), 2017, METI will hold an open public seminar in Tokyo to facilitate Japanese industry’s understanding of utilization of anti-dumping measures. METI will invite experts with deep knowledge and experience of such measures from the WTO Secretariat and the governments and industries of the U.S., the EU and Australia. They will discuss case examples of the benefits of increased facilitation in application and timely use of anti-dumping measures in their respective countries.

1. Background

Anti-dumping measures are special duties levied on imported products by the government of an importing country to adjust the export price of such dumped products to a normal value when these products cause injury to the domestic industry of the importing country. The World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreements allow governments to take such actions.

In recent years, cases of dumping of inexpensive imports have been increasing against the backdrop of global excess capacity. This has led to increasingly effective uses of trade remedy measures including anti-dumping measures aiming to restore level playing fields for competitive environments in global markets.

The panelists for this seminar will be invited from the WTO Secretariat and the governments and industries of the U.S., the EU and Australia. Reflecting on the above mentioned global trends, they will discuss case examples of the benefits of increased facilitation in application and timely use of such measures in their respective countries.
