All-Japan Metrology Congress 2017 to be Held METI Minister's Awards, Industrial Science and Technology Policy and Environment Bureau Director-General's Awards, and related events

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has designated November as Metrology Promotion Month and November 1 as Metrology Day, aiming to raise public awareness of metrology systems. As a part of this campaign, METI will hold the All-Japan Metrology Congress 2017 on November 1 (Wed.), 2017.

1. Background and purpose

In 1952, METI designated November 1 as Metrology Day, aiming to raise public awareness of metrology systems in society. Since then, METI has held various annual events in recognition of the day, and on November 1 (Wed.), 2017, it will hold the All-Japan Metrology Congress 2017 to recognize outstanding people who have contributed to metrology systems through the METI Minister’s Awards and other various awards.

2. Outline of the All-Japan Metrology Congress 2017

The congress will be held at the InterContinental Hotel Tokyo Bay (1-16-2, Kaigan, Minato Ward, Tokyo) on November 1 (Wed.), 2017.

At the congress, METI will recognize the following people.

  1. METI Minister’s Award (recognizing contributors to the metrology industry)
    METI recognizes people who have made outstanding contributions over many years to developing related businesses, developing and improving measuring instruments, raising public awareness of the philosophy of metrology, or administering systems of metrology in performing duties for metrology-related business operators or metrology-related associations. In FY2017, twelve people will be recognized.
  2. Industrial Science and Technology Policy and Environment Bureau Director-General’s Awards (recognizing contributors to the operation of the metrology system)
    METI recognizes contributors to the National Certified Measurer Examination, contributors to the practice of metrology systems from among those who have contributed to the fair practice of metrology offices, and other people who have made outstanding contributions to the practice of metrology systems. In FY2017, 14 people will be recognized.

3. Outline of the events

On November 1, 2017, various events will be held by the Metrology Day Organizing Committee as an effort for raising public awareness of metrology systems. Winners will be recognized for their achievements at these events, including a metrology-awareness slogan contest and a METI-sponsored competition titled “Let’s measure everything around us” for elementary school children, in addition to the events for Metrology Day as arranged by the All-Japan Metrology Congress 2017.

The events include the following activities:

  1. Recognizing winners of the public metrology-awareness slogan contest
    Aiming to raise public awareness of metrology, METI has called for applicants to submit slogans for raising public awareness of metrology. It will examine the submissions and at the event will recognize one grand award winner, two excellence award winners, and eleven honorable mention award winners.
  2. Recognizing winners of the “Let’s measure everything around us” contest
    Aiming to promote children’s understanding of metrology, METI called for elementary school children to apply with their projects focusing on measuring objects around them with their innovative ideas, including measuring things at school and at home. METI will examine the applications and select outstanding submissions, and at the event, it will recognize one grand award winner, two excellence award winners, and seventeen encouragement award winners.
  3. Special lecture
    Topic: The Existing Situation and Future Perspectives of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
    Speaker: Mr. Akihito Ogino, Company Director, A.I. Squared, Inc.
