The First Meeting of the Japan-U.K. Trade and Investment Working Group Held

On November 2, 2017, the Japan-U.K. Trade and Investment Working Group held its first meeting in Tokyo.

  1. On November 2, 2017, the Japan-U.K. Trade and Investment Working Group held its first meeting in Tokyo. As representatives of Japan, Mr. Takehiko Matsuo, Director-General for Trade Policy of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Mr. Hiroshi Kawamura, Deputy Derector-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other officials attended the meeting, while as representatives of the U.K., Ms. Vivien Life, Director Free Trade Agreements, Department for International Trade, and other officials were in attendance.
  2. On August 31, 2017, the Japan-UK summit meeting was held in Tokyo, and the leaders issued the Japan-UK Joint Declaration on Prosperity Cooperation and agreed that Japan and the U.K. will cooperate through their new Trade and Investment Working Group to advance  their trade and investment relationship under the declaration. Accordingly, both countries together established the working group which held its first meeting.
  3. At the meeting, the U.K. explained the current situation of its negotiations for leaving the European Union, and both sides exchanged views concerning the future enhancement of the Japan-U.K. economic relationship.
