Japan and Viet Nam Signed a Memorandum of Cooperation on Energy Fields

On November 9, 2017, Mr. Hiroshige Seko, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and H.E. Mr. Tran Tuan Anh, Minister of Industry and Trade, Viet Nam, held a meeting in Da Nang, the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, and signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) on Energy fields.

Under the MOC, a Japan-Viet Nam Energy Working Group will be established. It is expected that the Energy Working Group will contribute to further promoting energy cooperation between Japan and Viet Nam.

1. Background

Based on the discussions at the second meeting of the Joint Committee between Japan and Viet Nam on Cooperation in Industry, Trade and Energy held between Minister Seko and Minister Anh in June 2017, both sides agreed on establishment of a Japan-Viet Nam Energy Working Group under the Joint Committee between Japan and Viet Nam on Cooperation in Industry, Trade and Energy operated under the co-chairmanship of both ministers. Accordingly, on November 9, 2017, both sides signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in the fields of energy.

2. Outline of the MOC on Energy Fields

As a discussion opportunity between METI and the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Viet Nam, the ministries agreed on establishment of the Energy Working Group, aiming to exchange information and hold discussions concerning cooperation in the fields of energy, including energy policies, data and statistics, coal, liquefied natural gas (LNG), grid development, renewable energy, and energy efficiency and conservation.
