Winners of the Japan Medical Research and Development Awards Determined

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) hereby announces that two winners for METI Minister's Awards under the Japan Medical Research and Development Awards program were determined.

1.Outline of the awards program

Inaugurated in FY2017, the award program aims to honor the outstanding achievements, efforts and remarkable contributions to the promotion of research and development in the field of medical care.

Under this program, an examination committee (chair: Dr. Ryozo Nagai, President of the Jichi Medical University; see Appendix 1) screened candidate efforts recommended by three related ministries, i.e., the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW), and METI, and the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED), and based on the results of the screening, these ministries determined winners of the awards (see Appendix 2).

2. Winners of METI Minister’s Awards and outline of their achievements

    • Institute of Advanced Biomedical Engineering and Science, Tokyo Women’s Medical University
    • Center for Advanced Biomedical Sciences, Waseda University
  • Outline of the achievements
    • The Institute of Advanced Biomedical Engineering and Science, Tokyo Women's Medical University, developed a system in which researchers in the fields of medicine, engineering, pharmacy, and business are able to deploy multidisciplinary research and development and human resource development(biomedical curricula) in the same facility as an effort to lead the rest of the world.
    • The institute and the Center for Advanced Biomedical Sciences, Waseda University, jointly established the Tokyo Women's Medical University-Waseda University Joint Institution for Advanced Biomedical Sciences(TWIns) and developed a system for achieving collaboration between the medical and engineering fields both inside and outside of Japan.
    • These achievements made a significant contribution to the development of the pharmaceutical and medical equipment industries in Japan.
