Meeting of the IoT Security Working Group under the IoT Acceleration Consortium to be Held

Japan is facing a variety of challenges and risks in security caused by the development of the IoT-based society. To address this situation, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry(METI)and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications(MIC)decided to jointly hold a meeting of the IoT Security Working Group under the IoT Acceleration Consortium. The working group aims to hold discussions concerning the dissemination and public awareness raising of the IoT Security Guidelines ver. 1.0, the measures for securing the security of IoT equipment, and other issues.

1. Background

With the further dissemination of IoT equipment in society, Japan is facing a surging number of cyber-attacks. To address this situation, it is indispensable and urgently necessary to take cybersecurity measures.

METI and MIC compiled the IoT Security Guidelines ver. 1.0 in July 2016, through the efforts by the working group, to stipulate five guidelines targeting equipment manufacturers, service providers and other IoT-related businesses, and rules targeting public users, aiming to encourage companies and users to secure the security of IoT equipment. A future challenge that Japan should overcome is specific approaches to disseminating the guidelines among the public.

Moreover, some have been pointing out the need to advance specific discussions concerning efforts for public awareness raising, e.g., the IoT Security Comprehensive Measures compiled by the MIC and the Security-by-Design concept compiled by the Information-Technology Promotion Agency(IPA), and those for disseminating and promoting secured IoT equipment.

Against this backdrop, METI and MIC decided to hold a meeting of the working group to hold discussions concerning specific efforts in order to disseminate and raise public awareness of the guidelines and to accelerate the implementation of IoT in society, as well as to discuss concerning measures for securing the security of IoT equipment.
