Recall of Battery Packs for Laptop Computers Sold by Fujitsu Ltd. (Free Product Replacement)

Product accidents occurred in battery packs for laptop computers sold by Fujitsu Ltd.(corporate number: 1020001071491), causing the products and their surroundings to ignite.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry(METI)was informed of the accidents as a serious product accident and the Consumer Affairs Agency made an announcement on the accidents on September 8, 2017, in accordance with Article 35(1)of the Consumer Product Safety Act, which relates to accidents of unclear origin in a product other than a gas or oil appliance.

On December 13, to prevent further accidents, Fujitsu Ltd. made an official announcement on its website urging purchasers to remove battery packs subject to the recall from the bodies of laptop computers and to providing free-of-charge replacement services of such battery packs.

METI would like to encourage consumers who have purchased any of the products subject to the recall to stop using them immediately and contact the company above.

1. Nature of the accident and recurrence-prevention measures

(1)Nature of the accident

Product accidents occurred in battery packs sold by Fujitsu Ltd., causing the products and their surroundings to ignite.

Two serious-accident reports subject to Article 35(1)of the Act have been submitted.
(Control Nos:A201600728, A201700333: the company has defined all these products as "laptop computers.")

With regard to the accident referred to as Control No. A201600728, the investigation concluded that the cause of the accident was that a lithium-ion battery cell built into the battery pack short-circuited inside the cell due to the interference of foreign material, making the product anomalously overheat and causing the product to ignite.

The cause of the other accident referred to as Control No. A201700333 is assumed to be that a lithium-ion battery cell built into the battery pack caused the product to ignite. METI is still investigating the details of the cause.

No injuries occurred in these cases.

These battery packs are manufactured by Panasonic Corporation(corporate number: 5120001158218), and nine other serious product accidents occurred in battery packs built in laptop computers manufactured by Panasonic Corporation.

To prevent further accidents, on December 6, 2017, Panasonic Corporation started free-of-charge replacement of battery packs subject to the recall.(This recall was jointly released by the Consumer Affairs Agency and METI on December 6, 2017.)

(2)Recurrence-prevention measures

To prevent further accidents, on December 13, 2017, Fujitsu Ltd. provided related information on its website and will start the reception of battery packs subject to the recall for free replacement. Shipment of new battery packs for replacement will start in late January 2018.
