Japan, Australia and Singapore co-chair a Ministerial Meeting on Electronic Commerce in the margins of the 11th WTO Ministerial Conference and 70 WTO Members issue a Joint Statement

On December 13, 2017, in the margins of the 11th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC11) held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Mr. Hiroshige Seko, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan, Mr. Steven Ciobo, Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Australia, and Mr. Lim Hng Kiang, Minister for Trade and Industry, Singapore, co-chaired a Ministerial meeting on electronic commerce. After the conference, Ministers representing 70 WTO Members issued a Joint Statement.

1. Outline of the Ministerial Meeting on Electronic Commerce

On December 13, 2017, in the margins of the MC11 held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Minister Seko, Minister Ciobo and Minister Lim co-chaired a Ministerial meeting on electronic commerce.

Representatives from 39 WTO Members attended the meeting, and they exchanged views on the importance of creating an environment that further enables electronic commerce and the role international trade rules could play in maximizing the benefits of electronic commerce for businesses and consumers across the globe.

2. Outline of the Joint Statement

After this Ministerial meeting, Ministers representing 70 WTO Members that share the goal of advancing electronic commerce work in the WTO issued a Joint Statement(see the Appendix).

The summary of the joint statement is as follows;

  1. The Members will initiate exploratory work together toward future WTO negotiations on trade-related aspects of electronic commerce,
  2. a first meeting will be held in the first quarter of 2018.
