Quarterly Survey of Overseas Subsidiaries(July-September in 2017)Conducted

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry(METI)conducts a Survey of Overseas Subsidiaries on a quarterly basis, aiming to ascertain the business development and conditions of Japanese companies in overseas countries, and releases the results. METI hereby announces that it has compiled the survey results for the period of July-September 2017.

The total sales of overseas subsidiaries of Japanese companies from July to September 2017(based on dollars)have improved from the previous year, marking a sixth, consecutive, quarterly increase.

Summary of the results

(1)Sales

The total sales of overseas subsidiaries improved by 8.6% from the previous year, marking a sixth consecutive, quarterly increase.

Looking at the sales of overseas subsidiaries by region(North America, Asia and Europe), those in Asia, the region with the highest ratio of overseas subsidiaries at 50.7%, showed an increase of 12.2% over the previous year, growing for six consecutive quarters. In particular, sales of transportation equipment rose.

The sales in Europe(ratio:12.0%)also improved by 9.8% from the previous year, an increase for six consecutive quarters, while those in North America(ratio:28.7%)decreased by 1.5% from the previous year, the first decrease in 17 consecutive quarters.

(2)Amount of capital investment

The total amount of capital investment by overseas subsidiaries declined by 3.0% from the previous year, showed the first increase in 14 consecutive quarters.

Looking at the capital investment by region;in Asia, which is the region with the highest ratio of overseas subsidiaries at 44.9%, the figure declined by 7.1% from the previous year, its 19th consecutive quarterly decrease. Meanwhile, China showed the first increase in eleven consecutive quarters.

The capital investment in North America(ratio:35.5%)has increased by 3.0% from the previous year, the first increase in three consecutive quarters, while Europe(ratio:12.0%)showed an increase of 16.3% from the previous year, the first increase in three consecutive quarters.

(3)Number of employees

The total number of employees in overseas subsidiaries increased by 1.4% from the previous year, an increase for four consecutive quarters.

Looking at the numbers by region;in Asia, which is the region showing the highest ratio of overseas subsidiaries(69.6%), there was an increase of 0.5% over the previous year, which means four consecutive quarters of growth. In particular, numbers of employees for the transportation equipment rose.

The number of employees in North America(ratio:13.5%)increased by 2.8% from the previous year, for 25 consecutive quarters of increase, while the number of employees in Europe(ratio:9.5%)increased by 4.2% from the previous year, marking 17 consecutive quarters of increase.
