First Round of Certification Issued to the Courses on IT-Skill Training to Meet the Era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry(METI)has newly established a Program for Certifying Courses on IT-Skill Training to Meet the Era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution(commonly referred to as "Re-Skill Courses"). Under this program, the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry will certify expertise and practical educational training courses mainly in the fields of IT and data. Concerning the applications filed for this program, METI strictly examined them and finally certified 16 businesses and 23 courses.

1. Outline of the certification program

(1)Current situation of application filing

The program aims to certify, under the name of the METI Minister, expertise and practical educational training courses targeted at workers mainly for the fields of IT and data, in which future growth is strongly anticipated and significant contributions to employment creation are forecasted, thereby providing opportunities for workers to acquire advanced knowledge and expertise, and progress in their careers.

From September 15 to October 28, 2017, METI received the first round of applications for courses scheduled to start after April 2018.

(2)Examination results

Concerning the proposed courses submitted by the applicants, METI certified 16 businesses and 23 courses based on the results of strict examinations by experts in terms of technical matters and additionally by an external examination committee. For list of the courses that received the certification, see Appendix.

2. Effective period of the certification

This certification targets courses scheduled to start after April 2018, and the effective period of the certification is three years from April 1, 2018.

Note:If the courses that have been certified by the METI Minister meet certain requirements stipulated by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare(MHLW)and are designated so by the MHLW Minister, they are entitled to the benefits provided by the Education and Training Benefit System.

3. Coming schedule for the next round of certification

Regarding the next round of certification, METI will call for new applicants for courses scheduled to start after October 2018 and will start accepting applications for the certification process of such courses around April 2018. In addition, METI will expand the target fields for the IT-utilization category.
