Oral Healthcare Seminar 2018 to be Held - First public-private effort in Thailand and Malaysia-

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will hold Oral Healthcare Seminar 2018 in Thailand and Malaysia. At the event, Japan’s experts in the field of dentistry will present to the public the importance of oral healthcare to improve quality of life (QOL) and will also explain made-in-Japan products for oral care. Taking this opportunity, METI will also hold other seminars targeting dental practitioners and dental students so as to enrich cooperation between Japan and both Thailand and Malaysia in the field of oral healthcare.

1. Background

Against the backdrop of aging populations and increased lifespans, the importance of oral care has become ever more critical to improving QOL. In 1989, Japan launched a national campaign to create a more effective dental care system, known as the 8020 Campaign, which set as a guiding target the preservation of twenty or more teeth for all individuals until the age of eighty. The program had been regarded as a success, with over 50% of eighty-year-olds having attained this target by 2016. Backed by consumer interest and strong demand for industry quality, Japanese oral care products have been fulfilling outstanding functions in preventing periodontal disease and tooth decay. Sharing Japan’s efforts for oral healthcare with Asian countries is considered an effective means for promoting advanced Japanese oral care techniques worldwide while improving QOL in other Asian countries.

2. Efforts

Inviting officials from the Ministry of Public Health, both in Thailand and Malaysia, stakeholders from the fields of dental medical care and distribution, as well as the press, the seminar will bring together dentists and dental hygienists, representatives from manufacturers of oral healthcare products, and officials from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) and METI. These experts will explain Japan’s high public awareness of oral healthcare and products, which in turn can contribute to bettering QOL. Following this, METI will hold a networking event.

In addition, these experts will  explain Japan’s oral-healthcare activities to dental stakeholders such as dental hygienists. Through explaining such activities , METI will aim to disseminate to the public the importance of oral care and the advantages of Japanese oral-care products.
