Recall of Air Conditioners Imported by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (Currently, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Systems, Ltd.) (Free Product Inspection and Repair)

Product accidents occurred in air conditioners imported by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (currently, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Systems, Ltd.; corporate number: 4010401123213), causing the products to ignite and to deface their surroundings.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) was informed of the accidents as serious product accidents and the Consumer Affairs Agency made an announcement on the accidents on July 19, 2017, in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act, which relates to accidents of unclear origin in a product other than a gas or oil appliance.

To prevent further accidents, on January 11, 2018, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Systems, Ltd. made an official announcement on its website to start a product inspection and repair free of charge, including the same product models.

METI would like to encourage consumers who have purchased any such products to contact the company as indicated below.

1. Nature of the accident and recurrence-prevention measures

(1) Nature of the accident

Product accidents occurred in air conditioners imported by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (currently, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Systems, Ltd.), causing the products to ignite and to deface their surroundings.

Eight serious accident reports subject to Article 35 (1) of the Act have been submitted.
(Control Nos. A200700460, A201400527, A201500290, A201600243, A201600436, 201600484, A201600608, A201700209)

The cause of the accidents concerning Control Nos. A200700460, A201400527, A201500290, A201600243, A201600484 and A201600608 is assumed to be a connector of the fan motor anomalously overheating, causing the products to ignite. However, the details of the cause have not been confirmed and it is unclear whether or not the accidents were caused due to the products themselves. Therefore, the investigation was ended.

The cause of the rest of the accidents concerning Control Nos. A201600436 and A201700209 is also assumed to be that the surroundings of a fan motor connector in these products which resulted in the products igniting. METI is still investigating the details of the cause.

In addition, another product accident not covered by Article 35 (1) of the Act was reported to the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE).

No injuries occurred in these cases.

(2) Recurrence-prevention measures

To prevent further accidents, on January 11, 2018, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Systems, Ltd. provided related information on its website to start a product inspection and repair free of charge concerning the products subject to the recall.

2. Products to be recalled: outline of the products, product verification method, and other information

(1) Product type: Air conditioners

Air conditioners with certain model numbers that were imported by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (currently, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Systems, Ltd.) and manufactured from October 1999 to 2007

Check the bottom of your product referring to the picture below to find the manufacturing number and model number of the product, and confirm whether or not your product is subject to the recall on the company’s website or directly contact the contact counter below.
