Results of the Regional Economic and Industrial Research(October-December 2017)

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has compiled the results of the regional economic and industrial research that the regional Bureaus of Economy, Trade and Industry conduct on a quarterly basis to identify regional economic trends, and METI hereby releases the results.

[Highlights of the results]
The assessment of the national economic situation remains the same as that in the previous quarter. It is "improving moderately." Compared to the previous quarter, the assessment of the regional economic situation remains the same across Japan.

1. Regional Economic and Industrial Research

The regional Bureaus of Economy, Trade and Industry conducts surveys in their service areas using interviews and other techniques on a quarterly basis for the purpose of identifying economic trends, such as those related to business conditions, production, and investment in facilities. The Bureaus then collect and analyze the survey results.

2. General summary

The national economic situation is improving moderately (→)
Production shows steady performance as seen in the brisk performance of semiconductor integrated circuits in the electronic parts and devices industry and semiconductor manufacturing devices in the general-purpose, production, and business-oriented machinery industry. Business investment shows proactive movement in the investment for production improvement and laborsaving. The employment situation remains at a high level in the jobs-to-applicants ratio. As for private consumption, sales of luxury goods remain brisk and consumption by overseas tourists to Japan also continues to rise.

3. Regional summaries

[Hokkaido] Picking up
Production shows sluggishness due to the production decrease in marine processed products, while the production of construction materials increased. Private consumption is picking up backed by the steady performance in the sale of duty-free items and food and beverage. Tourism shows brisk performance backed by an increase in the number of overseas tourists and other factors.
[Tohoku] Picking up moderately although some businesses show weak performance
Production shows signs of picking up due to a high production level in production machinery. The employment situation is improving, while private consumption is at a standstill, as seen in the sluggishness facing convenience stores.
[Kanto] Improving moderately
Production shows signs of moderately picking up due to growth in the general machinery industry. The employment situation is improving. Private consumption is picking up backed by improvement in consumer confidence, as seen in wealthy class and middle-class consumer shopping trends at department stores.
[Tokai] Improving
Production shows signs of the increase in the transportation equipment industry and a moderate increase in the electronic parts and devices industry. Private consumption is moderately picking up due to the signs of movements in department stores and supermarkets as well as the steady performance in drug stores and passenger car sales.
[Hokuriku] Improving
Production remains at a high level mainly in the electronic parts and devices, and chemicals industries. Private consumption is moderately picking up as drug stores maintain brisk sales and automobile dealers continue to enjoy steady sales of passenger cars.
[Kansai] Improving moderately
Production remains flat but at a high level mainly in general-purpose, production, and business-oriented machinery, and electrical machinery industries. Private consumption is moderately improving backed by the briskness in the sales of clothing and other seasonable products due to cooler temperatures.
[Chugoku] Picking up moderately
Production shows signs of moderate picking up because of the production increase in the iron-and-steel and automobile industries. Private consumption is moderately picking up due to the movements seen in sales of clothing as well as the brisk sales of luxury goods and high-value-added products.
[Shikoku] Picking up moderately although some businesses show weak performance ()
Production shows sluggishness, with signs of picking up in plastic products. Private consumption is showing signs of picking up, while some businesses were adversely influenced by typhoons and unseasonable weather.
[Kyushu] Improving moderately.
Production continues to be at high level mainly in overseas demand. As for business investment, some businesses tend to invest in facilities to increase production and develop business in new fields. Private consumption is picking up since the sales of heavy clothing, cosmetics, luxury goods and other goods hold firm.
[Okinawa] Continuing to improve
Against the backdrop of the increase in the number of tourists in the service area and the improvement of employment environments, private consumption continues to improve. Business investment is also picking up.
