From March 5 (Mon.) to 8 (Thurs.), 2018, a BIE (Bureau International des Expositions) Enquiry Mission visited Japan. Japan conveyed to the mission its enthusiasm for hosting the 2025 World Expo in Osaka, Kansai region.

1. Background and purpose

Japan has declared to the BIE its candidature to host the World Exposition 2025 under the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.” In November 2018, the BIE is scheduled to determine the host country by casting votes. Prior to this election, a BIE Enquiry Mission visited Japan to examine the feasibility of Japan’s plan submitted to the BIE as a candidature to host the 2025 World Exposition.

2. Details of the visit

Japan explained to the mission the details of its bid dossier submitted to the BIE in September 2017. Following this, Prime Minister Abe, METI Minister Seko, and Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Okamoto exchanged views with members of the mission.

Moreover, Japan held a meeting between the mission and the Diet Members Caucus for the Realization of the 2025 World Expos in Osaka, Kansai region, and also held other meetings between the mission and the board members of the 2025 Japan World Expo Committee: Chairman Sakakibara (Chairman of KEIDANREN), President Matsui (Governor of Osaka Prefecture), and Vice President Yoshimura (Mayor of Osaka City). In addition, the mission visited Kyoto and toured the Urasenke Konnichian and the Yumeshima Island as a proposed exposition site in Osaka. Furthermore, the mission exchanged views with industrial players and stakeholders of shopping arcades in the Kansai region.

Through this itinerary, Japan encouraged the mission to experience Japan’s attractiveness as a candidature for hosting the 2025 World Exposition and conveyed to the mission its vision for the exposition that Japan upholds and its passion for hosting it.
