METI to Hold the First Meeting of Working Group 3 - Starting-up Cybersecurity Business Notification of meeting under the Study Group for Industrial Cybersecurity

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) decided to establish a working group under the Study Group for Industrial Cybersecurity, which held its first meeting in December 2017. The working group, called “Working Group 3 - Starting-up Cybersecurity Business,” will aim to uncover challenges related to current situations of starting up cybersecurity businesses and, based on this, discuss measures for vitalizing such businesses (e.g., discovering and creating new technologies and developing and expanding the existing technologies) and will hold its first meeting on April 4 (Wed.), 2018.

1. Background and purpose

In December 2017, METI established the Study Group for Industrial Cybersecurity to uncover challenges in cybersecurity that Japanese industries are facing and to promote related polices. At the meeting, the study group decided to establish three working groups for cybersecurity to discuss three issues, respectively: [ⅰ] strategies to integrally deploy policies related to systems, technologies and standardization, [ⅱ] management, personnel and international strategies as a common base on which entire cybersecurity policies, and [ⅲ] strategies to improve the quality of cybersecurity and to create international players therein.

From the future directions of these policies organized by the study group, Working Group 3 will hold discussions on measures for vitalizing such businesses (e.g., discovering and creating new technologies and developing and expanding the existing technologies).

2. Outline of the first meeting of the Working Group 3

The working group will hold its first meeting on April 4 (Wed.), 2018. The meeting will not be open to the public in order to ensure an opportunity for members to exchange their opinions in a frank and free manner. However, a summary of the minutes will be made public, in principle.
