METI Releases Report of Working Group on Standards of Judgment for Businesses Using Energy in Factories

The Working Group on Standards of Judgment for Businesses Using Energy in Factories, of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Subcommittee of the Committee on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy under the Advisory Committee for Natural Resources and Energy, held discussions concerning the expansion of target types of industries under the benchmark system for the service sector as well as the revision of judgment standards according to which energy conservation efforts in plants and other facilities are evaluated. METI hereby announces that the working group compiled its discussion results into a report.

1. Background and purpose

Under the Long-term Energy Supply and Demand Outlook (energy mix) formulated in July 2015, Japan estimates that it will improve energy consumption efficiencies equivalent to those in the period after the oil crises during the 1970s and will achieve an energy conservation goal of as much as 50.30 million kl (oil equivalent) in FY2030 compared to that before conducting related measures. The working group held discussions concerning designing of necessary systems for achieving the goals of the energy mix policy, and on March 30, 2018, compiled the discussion results into a report.

2. Highlights of the report
