Agency for Natural Resources and Energy Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting to be Held A policy platform for global utilization of hydrogen

On October 23, 2018, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) will jointly hold a Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting. The meeting will bring together ministers of major countries committed to hydrogen-related efforts worldwide, representatives of private companies and other stakeholders. Participants will exchange views on innovative developments in each country, the latest knowledge and possibility of international cooperation, and will hold in-depth discussions on future directions of policies for global utilization of hydrogen.

1. Outline and purpose

In response to the enforcement of the Paris Agreement as an international framework of countermeasures against climate change, member countries have been advancing efforts for de-carbonization. In order to achieve the so-called 2-degrees-Celsius goal by 2050, it is indispensable for each country to transform conventional energy systems through innovation and to strive to carry out an energy shift that is compatible with economic growth.

Hydrogen is a key technology for the realization of de-carbonization by connecting resources such as fossil fuels and renewable energy with carbon capture and storage, many countries are implementing efforts to allow for the use of hydrogen. In order to make hydrogen the next new energy alternative after renewable energy and realize a hydrogen-based society which fully implements hydrogen power, Japan formulated a Basic Hydrogen Strategy as the world’s first such strategy in December 2017, and based on this strategy, it has been advancing integrated efforts from the perspectives of both supply and utilization.

To enhance the utilization of hydrogen on a global scale, which is an effort that is drawing great attention on a global level, related countries need to harmonize and cooperate further. To this end, METI and NEDO decided to jointly hold a Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting to provide an opportunity for participants to exchange views on innovative developments in each country, share the latest knowledge and possibility of international cooperation and hold discussions on future directions of policies for global utilization of hydrogen, while maintaining a focus on the 2019 G20 summit meeting to be held in Japan.
