Selected Projects for Regional Business Conference to Encourage Direct Investment in Japan

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) jointly selected four projects for the Regional Business Conferences (RBC). In these projects, municipalities and other entities will invite senior management and other representatives of foreign-based companies to Japan, explain their attractiveness to such companies through sales representatives, and hold business matching and other events between foreign-based and regional companies.

1. Outline of the RBC

In the coming years, Japan will host international events, such as the Rugby World Cup in 2019 and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.. Taking these opportunities, METI will encourage municipalities to convey information on attractive business environments in their regions to the rest of the world, setting the time goal at 2020.

As one of the efforts to this end, between 2018 and 2020, METI and JETRO will sequentially hold a series of RBC projects. In these projects, they and municipalities proactive to attract foreign-based companies to their regions will collaboratively invite foreign-based companies to Japan that are highly interested in investment in specific Japanese regions. Heads of municipalities will explain their attractiveness to such companies through sales representatives, and business matching and other events between foreign-based and regional companies will be held.

2. Selected RBC projects (FY2018 projects)

On April 2, 2018, METI and JETRO started a call for proposals for new FY2018 RBC projects from municipalities as applicants and on May 16, 2018, selected the following four projects.

  1. Project for promoting direct investment in Japan in collaboration with the Medical Creation Fukushima 2018 program (to be scheduled in October 2018)
    Organizer: Fukushima Prefecture; project theme: medical care-related industry
  2. Project for attracting companies in Sweden and Finland to Fukuoka Prefecture (to be scheduled in October 2018)
    Organizer: Fukuoka Prefecture; project theme: IoT-related industry
  3. Regional Business Conference in IBARAKI (to be scheduled in February 2019)
    Organizer: Ibaraki Prefecture; project theme: cluster of R&D bases
  4. Inviting Investors for Innovation (to be scheduled in March 2019)
    Organizer: Osaka Prefecture; project theme: venture startups
