METI Establishes Expert Study Group on Ideal Approaches to CCS Demonstration and Research Projects

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has been engaging in efforts for the practical use of carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS), a technology expected to serve as a key to mid- to long-term countermeasures against global warming. As part of this, METI decided to establish an Expert Study Group on Ideal Approaches to CCS Demonstration and Research Projects in order to hold discussions on future approaches to demonstration and research projects, and the study group will hold its first meeting on June 11, 2018.

1. Outline

CCS technologies are expected to serve as a key to mid- to long-term countermeasures against global warming. To promote these technologies around 2020, METI has been engaging in a large-scale CCS demonstration in the Tomakomai area and R&D project and a survey of potential sites for storage of carbon dioxides in accordance with the Strategic Energy Plan and other policies. In particular, METI has been making steady progress in the demonstration project in Tomakomai, a project attracting global attention, in collaboration with regional stakeholders, as seen by the successful pressure injection of nearly 180,000 tons of carbon dioxides into the ground as of the end of May 2018.

Against this backdrop, the study group will hold discussions on expected challenges in the future practical use of CCS technologies and will organize the points of contention. METI will make use of the results of these discussions in future CCS projects.
