Successful Applicants for NEDO Project for Enhanced Efficiency of Trade Procedures in Global Supply Chains

Part of Project for the Development of Infrastructures for Creating New Industrial Models Taking Advantage of IoT

August 23, 2018

Joint Press Release with NEDO

The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) has been operating the Project for the Development of Infrastructures for Creating New Industrial Models Taking Advantage of IoT, aiming to promote efforts by and collaboration between private companies. Under the project, NEDO has been examining a variety of issues, including review of security measures, regulations and rules, through industry-based demonstration tests of business activities taking advantage of IoT and other advanced technologies so as to enhance business environments.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry hereby announces that NEDO both determined and adopted businesses participating in the Project for the Development of Infrastructures for Creating New Industrial Models Taking Advantage of IoT: Enhanced Efficiency of Trade Procedures in Global Supply Chains.

1. Outline of the project

As many Japanese companies have been using paper-based media or PDF files in their information exchanges involving trade practices, considerable time and cost is required for manual labor, such as re-input of data, checking for errors caused by such manual re-input, and correction of such errors. In addition, many such companies have not introduced digitalization into their business operations, a process enabling multiple businesses to, in particular, engage in efficient information transmission and sharing. This situation makes it difficult, for example, for exporters to smoothly ascertain the current condition of goods.

In response to this situation, METI decided to implement a project for establishing an infrastructure system for trade information exchange aiming to improve productivity of businesses involved in trade practices and shorten export lead time, as part of the Project for the Development of Infrastructures for Creating New Industrial Models Taking Advantage of IoT operated by NEDO. Under the project, NEDO will establish an infrastructure system on which stakeholders involved in the series of trade practices, including businesses that have not yet introduced any digitalization into their business, are able to accurately share data on goods, procedures and other related matters taking advantage of blockchain technologies. NEDO will demonstrate the system in related facilities at specific ports and examine effects of the system.

In addition to establishing the system, the project will implement a research initiative in order to formulate guidelines for standardization of data necessary for procedures of maritime exports, those for common rules, and other initiatives.

2. Adopted businesses

NEDO, the operator of the project, called for applicants for participating businesses in the project, and then determined and adopted the following two businesses as participants in the project in light of the discussion results of an external examination committee.
