Ten Startups Selected as the First Recipients of Support Measures under IPAS

August 30, 2018

The Japan Patent Office

The Japan Patent Office (JPO) selected ten startups as the first recipients of support measures under the IP Acceleration Program for Startups (IPAS). For each selected startup, the JPO will convene “IP Mentoring Teams” consisting of selected experts with skills to overcome challenges faced by the startups and will support the startups in building IP strategies for accelerating their business.

1. Outline of the IPAS

To expand business, collaborate with large companies, develop business overseas and develop themselves into “unicorns,” startups need to differentiate their business from other companies and establish their own brands, taking advantage of core technologies and ideas.

Under IPAS, separately from the call for these startups, the JPO made another call for applicants for IP Mentoring Teams and compiled a list of experts in the fields of IP and venture businesses who have experience with the IP challenges faced by the selected startups as well as areas in which the companies need support. These challenges and areas are identified in the core technologies or ideas and business plans that respective startups submitted. Based on this list, the JPO formed IP Mentoring Teams by matching startups with the selected experts with skills to overcome such challenges. These teams will collaborate in jointly developing strategies in which management and IP perspectives are integrated and will jointly aim to grow the startups.

2. Process for selecting startups subject to support measures

The JPO received applications from 59 startups and preliminarily selected 21 through document examination. In light of the results of pitch presentations held by these 21 startups before an examination committee of six experts, the JPO finally selected 10 startups.

3. Kick-off event of the IPAS

From 16:00, August 30 (Thur.), 2018, the JPO will hold a kick-off event of the IPAS at Venture Café Tokyo in Toranomon Hills. The JPO will introduce to the public the 10 selected startups and hold a panel discussion focusing on a subject titled “Startups and IP.” Admission is free.

4. Opening website exclusively for IPAS

On August 30, 2018, JPO launched a website exclusively for IPAS which provides information concerning its function, activities, and selected startups under the acceleration program, as well as information concerning mentors who will support startups, after convening the IP Mentoring Team.
