A fatal accident caused by the indoor use of a portable generator has been reported after the Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake on September 6, 2018. METI releases warning reminder.
Many people make use of portable generators for standby power supply when power outages are caused by disasters.
Exhaust from the operation of portable generators contain considerable amounts of carbon monoxide (CO) that can be deadly when inhaled. Therefore, portable generators should not be used in enclosed environments. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) strongly warns all users of such generators to use them carefully, in ventilated places outside of the home or establishment.
