Teams Selected for the Finals of the General Election for Outstanding Regional Brands in the Tokai and Hokuriku Region

The finals to be held in Nagoya City on December 12 (Wed.), 2018

The Japan Patent Office (JPO) and the regional bureaus of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (i.e. METI Kanto Bureau, Chubu Bureau and Kansai Bureau) have been advancing an event titled General Election for Outstanding Regional Brands in the Tokai and Hokuriku Region, and the teams entering the finals of the competition have been selected.

The finals will be held in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, on December 12 (Wed.), 2018. As general visitors will be eligible to cast votes, which is one of the selection criteria, the organizers wish that many of you will visit the site and participate.

1. Teams entering the finals of the election

The teams entering the finals of the election have been selected based on: the number of “Likes” earned on Instagram from articles posted by each of the 18 student teams and right holders participating in the competition; and the result of the JPO’s examination on their ideas for development of new products and new business.

2. Outline of the finals

Finalist university students will hold presentations on their ideas for development of new products and business. Concerning the details of the presentations, experts will examine and general visitors will cast votes to select the winners of the Grand Award and other awards.

  1. Opening remarks by organizers
  2. Seminar on branding regional products
    Keynote speech: How to produce regional brands
    Speaker: Mr. Toshihiro Takahashi, Chief Editor, Discover Japan magazine
  3. Presentations by finalist university students
  4. Voting by general visitors and examination (Note: General visitors will be eligible for casting one vote per person at the site.)
  5. Announcement of winners and commendation ceremony
  6. Closing remarks

Uncovering Award Earning high scores in items involving discovering regional attractiveness; in terms of understanding, ideas and collaboration
Presentation Award Earning the highest scores in the presentation and the largest number of votes by general visitors
Instagram Award Earning the largest number of “Likes” on the Instagram account

3. Reference: Outline of the Regional Collective Trademark System

Under the Regional Collective Trademark System, regional business cooperatives, industry associations, chambers of commerce and industry, NPOs and other associations are eligible for registering their own trademarks as a combination of a name of the region and a name of the product or service, if they satisfy predetermined requirements.

Regional collective trademarks aim to appropriately protect regional brands, thereby contributing to supporting the consolidation of the industrial competitiveness and the revitalization of regional economies by maintaining the trust of businesses. As of the end of October 2018, 641 regional collective trademarks have been registered.
