Series of Events for Promoting Utilization of Intellectual Property Rights in Fukushima to be Held

December 17, 2018

The Japan Patent Office (JPO) will hold a series of events for promoting utilization of intellectual property (IP) rights, mainly targeting regional SMEs and venture businesses, in three cities in Fukushima Prefecture: Aizuwakamatsu City, Iwaki City and Koriyama City. These events will focus on unique themes that meet regional demands in the prefecture and will provide speeches by representatives of companies inside and outside the prefecture on practical approaches to making use of IP rights in business, for e.g., keys to successful business and potential risks in such use.

The JPO hereby announces that on December 17, 2018, it will open an official website for the events and begin accepting participants in the first event in Aizuwakamatsu City.

1. Purpose of the events

Over seven years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake hit the Tohoku region. As more and more companies have been establishing offices in the region since then, the demand for utilization of IP rights by such companies is growing, in particular, in Fukushima Prefecture in which development of industrial environments suitable for incubating IPs have been advancing, such as efforts involving the Fukushima Innovation Coast Scheme and the Fukushima Renewable Energy Institute inaugurated and operated by the Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) over four years.

To address this situation, the JPO will hold a series of events for promoting utilization of IP rights, targeting regional SMEs, venture businesses and other entities in three cities in Fukushima Prefecture.

2. Key points of the events

As they comprise strong attributes and characteristics of companies, IP rights are significant resources for companies in starting up, growing and succeeding in business. Bearing this in mind, the JPO will uphold themes at respective events taking into consideration regional characteristics of the event sites. In addition, participating companies, municipalities, and specialized organizations and experts will explain to visitors at the events key points in utilization of IP rights in business and actions that companies should take.
