Joint Press Release with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications
On June 14 (Thur.), 2018, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will hold a meeting of the IoT Security Working Group under the IoT Acceleration Consortium to discuss future directions for research on security measures for IoT equipment.
1. Background and purpose
With the further public dissemination of IoT equipment, Japan is facing a surging number of cyberattacks on IoT equipment. To address this situation, it is urgently necessary to take measures to ensure cybersecurity. As part of the efforts for discussing such measures, METI and MIC held a meeting of the IoT Security Working Group under the IoT Acceleration Consortium in December 2017 and held discussions on measures for ensuring the security of IoT equipment.
Following this, MIC revised related laws and regulations to address cyberattacks (e.g., DDoS attacks), and the Council of Information and Communication of the MIC has been advancing research on security measures for protecting terminal facilities, including IoT equipment.
In addition to MIC, the Study Group for Industrial Cybersecurity and other METI groups have been advancing research on measures for ensuring security in respective industrial fields.
The meeting of the IoT Security Working Group under the IoT Acceleration Consortium on June 14, 2018, will focus on these efforts by METI and MIC and the private sector and, based on this, it will hold discussions on future directions for research on security measures for protecting IoT equipment.
