Establishment of the Photovoltaic Deployment Policy Office

The Agency for Natural Resources and Energy of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) established the Photovoltaic Deployment Policy Office within its New and Renewable Energy Division, the Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Department on October 1, 2009. This is an action taken to enhance the Agency’s liaison services concerning the New Purchase System for Solar Power-Generated Electricity, which will be launched in November 2009.

1. Now that the legislation related to the New Purchase System for Solar Power-Generated Electricity has been completed, purchasing of electricity from solar power generation is due to start on November 1, 2009 among those adopting the system.

2. To get ready for this launch, the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy established the Photovoltaic Deployment Policy Office (headed by Shoji Watanabe, Director of the New and Renewable Energy Division) within its New and Renewable Energy Division, the Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Department on October 1, 2009. This is an action taken to enhance the Agency’s liaison services concerning the system.

3. This new section will be responsible for answering questions about the details of the system from various entities, responding to inquiries from power suppliers, and planning public relations and public hearing activities for the system.

4. The Agency has already started a program to hold Solar Town Meetings (explanatory sessions on the system at ten sites) from September 24, and plans to further enhance such public relations and public hearing activities for the system.
