The First Asia Green IT Forum was held on October 6, bringing together delegates from governments and industries in eight Asian countries (Japan, China, Korea, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam). This was the first conference where Asian countries exchanged information and shared views on the importance of IT in combating global warming, with an eye toward widely spreading the concept of Green IT* and related activities across Asia.
The participants held extensive discussions and consequently issued a joint statement stipulating their future cooperation.
* To address the increase in energy consumption by IT equipment in the midst of the information explosion, industry, government and academia in Japan have been working in cooperation to promote "Green IT", which pursues two goals: (1) more energy-efficient IT systems and (2) society-wide energy conservation through the use of IT.
