Announcement of the FY 2009 (14th) New Energy Award

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) conducts the New Energy Award program with the aim of promoting the introduction of new energy sources by recognizing efforts related to new energy, such as the development of equipment, provision of services, and the introduction and promotion of facilities.

The New Energy Award Review Board (consisting of academics and others) carefully examined the 43 applications received and selected winners of the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Prize (2 projects), the Director-General of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy Prize (2), the Chairman of the New Energy Foundation Prize (6), and the Review Board Chair’s Prize (1).

1. Winners of New Energy Awards

Winners of the individual prizes of the New Energy Award are as follows:

(1) Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Prize: 2 winners

> “Biomass Tour Maniwa” to see, experience and learn how biomass is used in the Maniwa region

> “i-MiEV” new-generation electric vehicle

(2) Director-General of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy Prize: 2 winners

> Reducing CO2 emissions in half!!—A system for food processing plants that allows for both the local production and local consumption of biomass resources and the combined use of geothermal heat and exhaust heat from heating and cooling facilities

(3) Chairman of New Energy Foundation Prize: 6 winners

2. Outline

The New Energy Award is a program aimed at promoting the introduction of new energy sources by recognizing efforts related to new energy, such as the development of equipment, provision of services, and the introduction and promotion of facilities. Marking its 14th year this year, the program has played a major role in fostering the development and adoption of new-energy equipment and systems by recognizing a total of 146 outstanding products and projects to date.

3. Award ceremony and symposium

A ceremony will be held to present awards to the winners of the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Prize, the Director-General of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy Prize, the Chairman of New Energy Foundation Prize, and the Review Board Chair’s Prize. A symposium will coincide with the ceremony, featuring a keynote speech by Mitsubishi Research Institute Chairman Hiroshi Komiyama (former president of The University of Tokyo) and a panel discussion under the theme “Towards Dramatic Dissemination of New Energy Sources.”
