Commencement of in-store sales of products carrying the Carbon Footprint Label

Starting February 1, products carrying the Carbon Footprint Label will be available on store shelves throughout Japan.

1. What is a carbon footprint of products?

The carbon footprint of products is calculated as the quantity of CO2-equivalent emissions of greenhouse gases during the product’s entire life cycle, from raw material acquisition to disposal and recycling, and is displayed on the product in an easy-to-understand manner.

METI launched the Carbon Footprint Pilot Program as a commissioned program this fiscal year in cooperation with related ministries.

2. Commencement of in-store sales

Under the program, the carbon footprint calculation results and labeling methods for two kinds of products to be sold from February 1 (wiener sausage and ham made of pork loin) were examined and determined to be appropriate. As a result, these products are permitted to be sold with the Carbon Footprint Label displayed. They will be the first products carrying the Carbon Footprint Label to be available on store shelves throughout Japan.
