FY 2008 Energy Supply and Demand Report (final report)

The Agency for Natural Resources and Energy released a final report on Japan’s energy supply and demand situation for FY 2008, based on the results of a variety of energy-related statistics.

Summary

  • Final energy consumption decreased 6.7% year on year (but increased 6.0% from the FY 1990 level) due mainly to a significant decline in energy consumption in the industry sector. This was the largest decline since FY 1965.
  • Carbon dioxide emissions originating from energy decreased 6.6% year on year (but increased 7.5% from the FY 1990 level) due to a decline in energy consumption.

Highlights of the final report

  • In the industry sector, energy consumption fell 11.1% year on year (a 10.3% decline from the FY 1990 level) due to a 12.7% drop in production in the manufacturing and mining industries caused by the economic downturn.
  • In the residential/commercial sector, energy consumption declined 2.7% year on year (a 35.3% increase from the FY 1990 level) as a result of a 2.8% reduction in activity in the commercial sector and a 3.6% fall in energy consumption in the residential sector.
  • Energy consumption in the transportation sector declined 4.0% year on year (an 8.0% increase from the FY 1990 level). This is primarily attributable to a 4.3% drop in the volume of freight transportation due to the economic downturn.
  • Although energy efficiency improved in the transportation and residential sectors, energy intensity increased in the industry sector for the first time in seven years as a result of a substantial drop in capacity utilization.
　

Note 1:This final report reflects the 2005 Input-Output Tables for Japan released in March 2009. (The tables are released once every five years.)

Note 2:The amounts of energy shown for reference on the subsequent pages are expressed in the energy unit (joule). To convert them into oil equivalents (kiloliter), multiply the numbers in peta joules (PJ, 10 to the 15th power joules) by 0.0258 to get numbers expressed in million kiloliters of oil equivalent.
(Conversion to oil equivalent: 1 liter of crude oil = 9,250 kcal = 38.7 MJ; 1 MJ = 0.0258 liters)
