The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) today announced projections for anticipated growth in the robot market. According to the projections, the robot industry is expected to grow to 9.7 trillion yen(JPY) by 2035, driven by the expansion of robots into new sectors such as services, in addition to growth in manufacturing and other sectors where markets already exist.
1. The robot industry is expected to grow in part due to Japan’s efforts to compensate for the decline in its workforce and the increase in workloads that are the product of its aging population and falling birthrate. The need to further improve the quality and productivity of products and services will also contribute to this expected growth.
2. In order to form a picture of the growth potential of the robot industry, METI and NEDO developed estimates for the robot market through 2035, based on domestic production volume.
3. Growth potential was examined for each sector where robots are used, such as the manufacturing and service industries, using models of market penetration rates and prices for similar products. The results indicate that the market for robots will grow to 2.9 trillion yen by 2020, and 9.7 trillion yen by 2035.
4. To promote the growth of the robot industry, METI and NEDO will continue their efforts related to the implementation of projects that target the commercial development of robots that assist with daily life activities. METI and NEDO will also strive to create new markets for the industry through joint public and private efforts led by the Robot Business Promotion Council and other institutions.
