Mr. Masayuki Naoshima, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, and Mr. Chen Deming, Minister of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the establishment of the E-Commerce Policy Council. Both countries expect to further bilateral cooperation in the area of e-commerce.
1. As China’s e-commerce market has rapidly expanded (with about 400 million Internet users and a consumer e-commerce market worth about \3.3 trillion), business partnerships between Japan and China in this sector are swinging into full gear. The E-Commerce Policy Council has been established as a framework for practical cooperation to accelerate the growth of e-commerce in both countries.
2. The Council will (a) study and share e-commerce policies and systems, (b) study and share successful applications of e-commerce and Internet-related technologies at companies, and (c) cooperate on exchange activities, such as joint e-commerce projects between relevant institutions in Japan and China.
3. The Council is expected to help China learn about Japan’s experiences from practices in the e-commerce sector, such as the protection of personal information, and at the same time enable Japan to develop medium- and long-term relations with China with a view to enhancing Japanese companies’ presence in the fast-growing Chinese market and improving the business environment there.
